Aimee Harris, a Florida woman, was sentenced to one month in prison and three months of home confinement for stealing and illegally selling a diary belonging to Ashley Biden, President Joe Biden’s daughter.
Harris pleaded guilty last two years to conspiring to transport stolen property across state lines after admitting she received $20,000 from the conservative group Project Veritas for Ashley Biden’s personal belongings, including the diary.
At her sentencing in Manhattan federal court on Tuesday, Judge Laura Taylor Swain called Harris’ actions “despicable” before issuing the sentence of incarceration followed by home detention.
Aimee Harris, holding back tears, apologized to Ashley Biden, saying she regretted making the president’s daughter’s private life public. She cited her history of domestic abuse and trauma.
However, prosecutors argued that she exhibited a “pattern of disrespect for the law” motivated by greed and a desire to impact the 2020 political landscape. They said Harris and her co-conspirator first tried unsuccessfully to sell the diary to Donald Trump’s reelection campaign.
The judge agreed Harris hoped to influence the election, saying she stole Ashley Biden’s “everything she could get her hands on” to try to “damage” President Biden.
Aimee Harris’ co-defendant, Robert Kurlander, has also pleaded guilty but hasn’t been sentenced yet. According to NBC News, Project Veritas, which paid for and published excerpts of the diary, has identified itself as a news organization.
In addition to her prison sentence, Harris was ordered to pay money earned from the illegal sale.
