The Eurovision Song Contest got a little bit dramatic when Netherlands’ contestant, Joost Klein, was unexpectedly disqualified from the competition just hours before Saturday’s eagerly awaited final in Malmö, Sweden. The expulsion came amid an escalating controversy surrounding Israel’s participation in the pan-continental pop extravaganza.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the event’s organizer, revealed that “a complaint made by a female member of the production crew” against the Dutch singer/rapper, was being investigated by the Swedish police.
Due to that, the EBU deemed it inappropriate for Joost Klein to perform in the final of the widely popular music competition.
The artist wasn’t seen at two dress rehearsals on Friday and this prompted more speculation about an “incident” that the EBU clarified did not involve any other performer or delegation.
This year’s event hasn’t been smooth sailing at all. There have been protests over Israel’s involvement, with some calling for the country’s exclusion due to its ongoing conflict in Gaza. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators have also taken to the streets of Malmö, demanding a boycott and a ceasefire.
Israeli singer Eden Golan, whose song’s original title was changed due to its apparent reference to the Gaza conflict, faced boos during rehearsals but secured a spot in the final through public voting.
