Consumers are being urged to check their refrigerators for certain cream cheese products sold at Aldi and Hy-Vee grocery stores, as the companies have issued recalls due to potential salmonella contamination.
In cooperation with Schreiber Foods, Inc., Aldi has voluntarily recalled multiple varieties of its Happy Farms brand cream cheese spreads “out of an abundance of caution.” The affected products include 8-ounce containers of Happy Farms Whipped Cream Cheese Spread, Chive & Onion Cream Cheese Spread, Regular Cream Cheese Spread, and Strawberry Cream Cheese Spread.
The recalled items were distributed to Aldi stores across 29 states, including Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, and several others. The products carry a range of sell-by dates from August 30, 2024, to September 22, 2024.
Separately, Hy-Vee, Inc., an Iowa-based grocery retailer, has also issued a voluntary recall for two varieties of its Hy-Vee brand cream cheese spreads. The affected products are the 12-ounce Hy-Vee Cream Cheese Spread with a use-by date of October 1, 2024, and the 8-ounce Hy-Vee Whipped Cream Cheese Spread with use-by dates of August 7, 2024, and August 14, 2024.
The Hy-Vee recall impacts products sold at the company’s stores, drugstores, and convenience stores across eight Midwestern states: Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
Both companies stated that the recalls were initiated “out of an abundance of caution” due to the potential for salmonella contamination. As of now, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled products.
Salmonella is a bacterial infection that can cause severe symptoms, including diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. While most people recover within a week, the illness can be particularly severe for young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
Customers who have purchased the affected cream cheese products are urged to discard them immediately or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Both Aldi and Hy-Vee have removed the recalled items from store shelves and have encouraged consumers with questions or concerns to contact their respective customer service lines.
