The Buffalo Bills have shaken up the AFC hierarchy by trading elite wide receiver Stefon Diggs to the upstart Houston Texans in a blockbuster deal.
The full terms see the Texans acquiring Diggs along with a 2024 6th-round pick and a 2025 5th-rounder, while Buffalo receives a 2025 2nd-round pick from the Minnesota Vikings that Houston previously acquired.
For the Bills, this move is a calculated reset as they overhaul their offensive supporting cast around $258 million quarterback Josh Allen.
While Stefon Diggs had been remarkably productive over four seasons in Buffalo, setting franchise records and earning four straight Pro Bowl nods, the combination of his age (30), hefty contract, and reported disconnect with the organization made this an understandable albeit difficult decision.
For a Bills team that has now traded or released multiple established veterans like Tre’Davious White, Jordan Poyer, and Mitch Morse, this trade allows them to remake their roster around Allen’s prime years.
On the other side, the Houston Texans are making a resounding statement that their rebuild is shifting into overdrive after landing QB C.J. Stroud with the 2nd overall pick. Adding Diggs supercharges the Texans’ receiving corps alongside emerging talents like Nico Collins and Tank Dell to give Stroud an array of dangerous targets to distribute the ball to.
For Stroud, inheriting a bona fide No. 1 receiver of Diggs’ caliber should accelerate his development immensely as Houston transitions from tearing down to going all-in on winning immediately in the AFC South.
While risky from an asset management standpoint, the Texans are clearly operating in a win-now mindset aimed at maximizing the early years of Stroud’s rookie contract.
As for Diggs himself, the fresh start in Houston could provide rejuvenation as he moves on from any lingering frustrations in Buffalo and forms a potentially prolific connection with Stroud’s elite arm talent.
Though he turned 30 in November last, Stefon Diggs has shown no signs of decline after averaging over 100 catches, 1,300 yards, and 8 TDs over the past three seasons with the Bills.
