Chance the Rapper and his longtime wife Kirsten Corley Bennett have revealed they are going their separate ways after 5 years of marriage.
The couple, who share two young daughters together, announced the “decision to part ways” in a joint statement posted to their Instagram stories on April 3rd.
“After a period of separation, the two of us have arrived at the decision to part ways,” the statement read. “We came to this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together. God has blessed us with two beautiful daughters who we will continue to raise together.”
Chance, whose real name is Chancelor Bennett, and Kirsten asked for privacy as they “navigate this transition” of separating. The pair had been married since March 2019, though they had a legal civil ceremony in December 2018 ahead of their larger wedding celebration, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The Grammy-winning rapper and his wife, are parents to daughter Kensli, 8, and younger daughter Marli Grace, 4. They had initially met as children growing up in Chicago, with Chance previously recounting a sweet story of seeing Kirsten performing with friends at just 9 years old and knowing even then he wanted to marry her one day.
In the weeks leading up to their separation announcement, there were no outward signs of marital issues. Just last month on March 9th, they celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary, though neither marked the occasion with any public tributes as they had in previous years.
The joint statement suggests the split is an amicable one as Chance and Kirsten prepare to work on co-parenting their two young daughters together despite going their separate ways romantically.
