Just days after setting the internet ablaze with her edgy, punk-inspired look at the iHeart Radio Music Awards, JoJo Siwa has doubled down on her bold rebrand.
The 20-year-old singer dropped the music video for her new single “Karma” on Friday, fully leaning into a mature and daring aesthetic.
The video depicts Siwa as a scorned lover exacting vengeance, seductively romping around a moonlit beach while delivering pointed lyrics aimed at an unfaithful ex:
“Karma’s a bitch, I should’ve known better/ if I had a wish, I would’ve never effed around/ When I saw the pics of you and her, I felt the knife twist.”
In a behind-the-scenes clip shared by Entertainment Tonight, JoJo Siwa revealed the beachy, revenge-themed concept had been planned for over a year, emphasizing her control over the creative vision: “Everything I can have my hand in, I have my hand in.”
The former child star has been open about her desires to shed her youthful, bubblegum pop image. On the iHeart red carpet, she cited edgy reinventions by Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus as major inspirations for her bold makeover.
While “Karma” certainly achieves JoJo Siwa’s aim of dropping jaws and sparking discourse, the raunchy, hip-thrusting choreography has emerged as the main talking point.
Countless tweets have even playfully suggested the video’s sultry energy even triggered seismic activity in New York City on the day of its release.
The Dance Mom’s star is determined to shed her teenage persona and fast. While she’s anticipating some backlash from the media, she remains undeterred as she told E! News:
“People are afraid of things they don’t know. New things can be very, very scary.”
