Kristen Wiig celebrated her fifth time hosting Saturday Night Live by being faux-inducted into the elite “Five-Timers Club.” But the ceremony was delightfully derailed by a succession of big-name guest stars who hilariously had not actually qualified for the exclusive jacket.
The expectant Wiig kicked things off by expressing her excitement to officially join the five-timers ranks. However, her enthusiasm was quickly deflated as Paul Rudd, Jon Hamm, Matt Damon, Martin Short, Will Forte, Fred Armisen and even next week’s host Ryan Gosling all came out sporting five-timer jackets despite hosting fewer than five times.
“What is going on here? I was really excited but now it just seems not that special,” a bewildered Wiig remarked as the very ‘unqualified’ stars continued filing out.
The skit allowed for some wonderfully self-deprecating jokes, like Damon claiming his first “so good” hosting stint in Lorne Michaels’ eyes counted as three times.
“Lorne [Michaels] said the first time I hosted was so good, it accounted for three — and then second time not quite as good that only counted for two. But by my math, that’s five. Maybe.”
The false five-timers weren’t merely brief cameos either. Hamm, Rudd, Damon, Forte and Armisen all made appearances throughout the night in various sketches. Highlights included a 1960s office party parody revisiting Hamm’s Mad Men vibe and Rudd playing an awkward retiree named Gitz.
Kristen Wiig herself is staying busy, currently starring in the Apple TV+ series Palm Royale and returning as Lucy in Despicable Me 4.
