The wildly popular and delightfully unhinged “Venom” film series is gearing up for its climactic third installment with the debut of the first trailer for “Venom: The Last Dance.” Tom Hardy returns as the reluctant host to the wise-cracking alien symbiote, and based on the footage, their chaotic bond faces its greatest challenge yet.
The trailer opens ominously, with Hardy’s Eddie Brock and his parasitic other half Venom on the run and “hunted by both of their worlds.” As an imposing military figure (Chiwetel Ejiofor) gravely states, an unstoppable army of Venom’s shapeshifting alien brethren are headed for Earth in an all-out invasion.
Faced with this intergalactic threat, Brock/Venom is recruited by scientist Dr. Payne (Juno Temple) to investigate and contain the alien phenomena. However, the mismatched duo seems more interested in devouring henchmen than following orders in their trademark zany style.
The action ramps up considerably as the symbiotes arrive, with Venom shown ferociously battling a massive member of his species atop a mid-flight jetliner. “We may not make it out of this alive, buddy,” Hardy’s Brock solemnly warns his alien companion.
While the stakes are apocalyptic, the trailer retains the franchise’s signature oddball humor. A shot of Venom comically galloping along as a hyper-powered horse perfectly captures the series’ ability to blend intense visual spectacle with self-aware campiness.
“Venom: The Last Dance” is the final planned entry in Sony’s Spider-Man-adjacent symbiote trilogy, which kicked off in 2018. The original and its 2021 follow-up “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” both proved surprising hits, collectively grossing over $1.3 billion at the global box office.
Fans have also been treated to tantalizing hints of Venom’s presence in the mainstream Marvel Cinematic Universe, setting the stage for a potential crossover with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. The new trailer leans into those devilishly exciting prospects.
Directed by Kelly Marcel from her own script, “The Last Dance” seems primed to be a gloriously overblown and deliriously entertaining swan song for Hardy’s unconventional Marvel antihero. The film hits theaters on October 6th.
